- Conducts policy-relevant research on the economic and policy factors in the United States and elsewhere that affect markets for agricultural products. Defines new lines of research in response to emerging policy issues, when appropriate. Formulates research plans, developing methodology, determining data needs, and defining resources needed to carry out complex economic research and analysis programs of great significance, difficulty, and national importance. Conceptualizes and analyzes the economics underlying the medium and long term trade trends. Applies a high degree of originality and analytical thinking to identify specific parameters and priorities for problems to be investigated and to formulate a research hypothesis. Effectively communicates, for a non-economist audience, authoritative technical findings and information pertinent to Departmental actions and policy decisions related to international agricultural markets, policy, and trade. Produces authoritative technical findings and information pertinent to Departmental actions and policy decisions related to resource use and management, and to research and development. In depth investigation of the existing and potential agricultural economic ties between the countries of a particular region- such as Sub-Saharan Africa, Asia, or Europe- on the one hand and the United States and the rest of the world on the other.
- Qualifications
- These positions are located at the ERS Market & Trade Economics Division International Trade and Development (ITD) Branch. Research Economists have open-ended promotion potential. Research accomplishments & their impact on the duties & responsibilities of positions are evaluated periodically. The grade level is limited only by the individual's demonstrated ability to perform research of recognized importance to ag markets & trade. Final grade level may be determined by a peer review panel.
